1. Mate

Some men use mate as a way of addressing other men when they are talking to them.

经常用于亲密关系。和好朋友说话的时候可以用,类似于美国人用的“buddy、pal、dude”。

例如:

'Alright, mate'

Come on mate, things aren't that bad.

别灰心,兄弟,事情没那么糟。

2. Bugger All

Bugger all is a rude way of saying 'nothing'.

相当于“nothing at all”,只不过这个说法更通俗一点。

例如:

'I’ve had bugger all to do all day.'

He does bugger all( work )around here.

他在这一带什么事都不做.

3. Knackered

If you say that you are knackered, you are emphasizing that you are extremely tired.

用来形容一个很累,很疲惫,就是筋疲力尽的意思。

例如:

‘I am absolutely knackered after working all day.’

4. Gutted

If you are gutted, you feel extremely disappointed or depressed about something that has happened.

这个是英国俚语中最悲伤的表达方式之一,表示很悲痛。

例如:

‘His girlfriend broke up with him. He’s absolutely gutted.’

5. Gobsmacked

If you say that you were gobsmacked by something, you are emphasizing how surprised you were by it.

难以置信,表示震惊。

例如:

'I was gobsmacked when she told me she was pregnant with triplets(三胞胎).'

6. Cock Up

If you cock something up, you ruin it by doing something wrong.

犯错,而且这个错误比较严重。

例如:

‘The papers sent out to the students were all in the wrong language–it’s a real cock up.’

‘I cocked up the orders for table number four.’

7. Blinding

很棒,极好的。

例如:

‘That tackle(截球)from the Spanish player was blinding.’

8. Lost The Plot

If someone loses the plot, they become confused and do not know what they should do.

这个表达方式可以表示很愤怒,如果是过去式的话,那就表示一个人很荒谬可笑。

例如:

‘When my girlfriend saw the mess I’d made, she lost the plot.’

9. Cheers

这个在英国不同的郡有不同的意思。在有些地方就是朋友一起聚会喝酒时干杯,但有些地方则表示感谢,就是 ‘thank you’的意思了。

‘Cheers for getting me that drink, Steve’.

10. Ace

If you say that something is ace, you think that it is good and you like it a lot.

‘I think I aced that exam’.

11. Damp squib

You can describe something such as an event or a performance as a damp squib when it is expected to be interesting, exciting, or impressive, but fails to be any of these things.

字面上的意思就是“哑炮”,也就表示什么事失算落空了。

例如:

‘The party was a bit of a damp squib because only Richard turned up.’

The all-party meeting was a damp squib.

12. All to pot

表示情况失控。

这个表达方式年代久远,但至今仍然有人在用。

例如:

‘The birthday party went all to pot when the clown turned up drunk and everyone was sick from that cheap barbecue stuff.’

13. The bee’s knees

来表示你很钦佩的人或事。

例如:

‘She thinks Barry’s the bee’s knees.’

14. Chunder

‘I ate a bad pizza last night after too many drinks and chundered in the street.’

15. Take the piss

If you take the piss out of someone, you tease them and make fun of them.

‘The guys on TV last night were taking the piss out of the government again.’

16. Car park

这个英国随处可见,就是美国喜欢用的parking,停车场的意思。

17. Fortnight

A fortnight is a period of two weeks.

‘I’m going away for a fortnight to Egypt for my summer holiday.’

18. Tosh

pretentious or silly talk or writing

表示垃圾或废话。

‘That’s a load of tosh about what happened last night’还可以说:‘Don’t talk tosh.’

19. Nice one

表示讽刺意味,但是语境不同的话,也可以表示真诚的意思。例如:‘You messed up the Rutherford order? Nice one, really.’

20. Brass monkeys

表示天气很冷。字面意思就是冷得把铜猴都冻成球了。

‘You need to wear a coat today, it’s brass monkeys outside.’
