At the "2026 Ocean Vision · Ningbo" event held on September 22, 2026, Dai Minhan - Director of the Fujian Ocean Innovation Center (Fujian-OI), Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Tan Kah Kee Chair Professor at Xiamen University - was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) and delivered a keynote speech.
At the same event, Prof. Choo Yoo Sang, Senior Visiting Scholar at Fujian-OI, Emeritus Chair Professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS), and Advisor to The Technology Centre for Offshore and Marine, Singapore (TCOMS), was honored with the Recognition of Contributions to International Marine Professional Development.
Charting the Blue Frontier:
A Historic First for Chinese Marine Science
Founded in 1889 as the Institute of Marine Engineers, IMarEST, headquartered in London, is the world’s premier international professional body and learned society for marine engineering, science, and technology. Fellowship represents IMarEST's highest grade of membership, historically reserved for preeminent leaders who have made extraordinary contributions and demonstrated exceptional leadership across the global marine sector.
Prof. Dai Minhan’s election as an IMarEST Fellow is not only a profound international endorsement of his academic excellence, but also marks the first time a scholar from China’s marine science community has received this highest distinction, reflecting the global community's high regard for his pioneering contributions to marine science, technology, and interdisciplinary integration.
Bridging Disciplines:
Empowering a Sustainable Ocean Future via Cross-Disciplinary Innovation
As a strategic scientist operating at the vanguard of international marine research, Prof. Dai has long championed the deep integration of marine science, technology, and engineering.
He recognizes that the increasingly complex challenges confronting our global ocean can no longer be resolved through isolated disciplinary lenses. Meaningful progress demands breaking down traditional disciplinary boundaries by harmonizing cutting-edge fundamental science, advanced marine engineering, sound ocean governance, and innovative blue-finance —all anchored by a rigorous commitment to co-design.
In his acceptance remarks, Prof. Dai shared profound reflections on this vision, noting that becoming an IMarEST Fellow is less a personal accolade than a solemn responsibility to serve as an "Ocean Ambassador":
“We must not only catalyze interdisciplinary and cross-border collaboration — safeguarding our blue planet through an ecosystem paradigm of (Science + Technology + Governance + Finance) × Co-design², but also pass the torch across generations, building robust bonds of learning and mentorship to empower the next wave of marine leadership.”
Furthermore, Prof. Dai delivered a keynote speech titled Evolution and Tipping Dynamics of Complex Coastal Zone Systems —Understanding and Managing Critical Transitions in Coastal Zones under Human and Climate Stresses, sharing fresh insights from his cutting-edge research and engaging global delegates in deep dialogues regarding the mechanisms of coastal system dynamics and scalable adaptation pathways.
Joining Hands:
Deepening International Cooperation for a Shared Blue Vision
Prof. Choo Yoo Sang, who received the Recognition of Contributions to International Marine Professional Development at the event, was the first Asian President in IMarEST’s history and is now an Honorary Fellow. He has devoted his career to advancing global marine professionals standards.
Capitalizing on this momentous occasion, the Fujian-OI delegation engaged in high-level dialogues with IMarEST leadership and global experts. Moving forward, both parties will leverage this high-tier international platform to introduce world-class engineering standards, elite think-tank resources, and international professional accreditation frameworks.
This strategic direction precisely mirrors Fujian-OI’s mission and vision: "Rooted in the frontiers, connected globally, and serving China's national maritime strategy." Building upon this milestone, Fujian-OI will further elevate its strategic partnerships with IMarEST and leading international academic and industrial entities, jointly fostering world-class marine talent, catalyzing high-quality advancements in green shipping, port decarbonization, and deep-sea engineering equipment, and contributing robust "Fujian-OI Wisdom" and Chinese expertise to the global blue economy and ocean sustainability.
About the Event
