Aerospace cause, power first

——China’s liquid rocket engine expert Tan Yonghua

Tan Yonghua (1964 - ), graduated from Northwestern Polytechnical University, is a China’s liquid rocket engine expert and researcher. Over the past two decades, he has participated in and organized a number of developing works of the key models in liquid rocket engine. He has made great contribution to the development of China's space industry and the modernization of national defense technology. He is honored as "the head of China's space liquid power " in his field.

Studying in NPU, with the aspiration for aerospace

Tan Yonghua was born in April 1964 in Hanjiang,Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province, and was admitted to Northwestern Polytechnical University in 1980. In 1987, after his graduation from NPU, Tan Yonghua obeyed the arrangement without hesitation to come to the 067 base which is located in Qinling Mountains, and engaged in liquid rocket engine design. From the beautiful south China to the ancient capital Xi'an, the bustling modern city to the remote mountains with hard conditions, the environment did not affect Tan Yonghua’s ambition. Poor life made him more intuitive to understand the hardships and the persistence of the development of China's space industry.

As early as in the laboratory work period, Tan Yonghua has paid close attention to the latest development in the world space field, hoping to find suitable entry point for China's space development. This belief was even more intense after 2001, when Tan Yonghua assumed the deputy director of 067 base. And the field of liquid power in China's space industry is about to open a new page because of this young man.

Getting tasks at a critical moment, making significant breakthroughs

In the early 1990s, the engine research work of LM-E rocket launcher was carried out fully with heavy task and limited time. As a young designer, Tan Yonghua was responsible for the design of the trigeminal beam booster frame used in this engine. The work had never been done before in China and little information could be found. Under the heavy pressure, Tan Yonghua quickly made up his mind and threw himself into the battle. During the day, he negotiated with others. At night, he stayed up to draw pictures for the programs. Finally, the hard work paid off. His design had been applied to many other rockets, including LM-2F which sent Yang Liwei into the space.

Refined style of study, fortitudinous temperament is the real-life portrayal for Tan Yonghua. In the process of overcoming various difficulties, the young liquid rocket engine expert grew up quickly in China’s space field. As he took the burden of the deputy director of the 067 base (now the Six Institute of the Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation), the task of the deputy commander of the new non-toxic, non-polluting, large thrust, high-performance high-pressure combustion cycle engine fell on his shoulders! In the critical moment of four consecutive defeats, he led the researchers to carry out some painstaking studies and understand the technology thoroughly. They struggled tenaciously and ultimately they made great breakthrough in the new engine development! In recent years, this new rocket engine development work has developed continually and China has become the world's second master country of this new liquid rocket engine technology. The successful development of the engine is highly recognized by the leaders of China, and it is considered "one of the five highlights" in the future of China’s aerospace industry.

During more than 30 years’ space career, Tan Yonghua grew up from an ordinary designer to the director of the research, from the institute director to the only institute dean of liquid rocket engine research. He has made significant contribution to the development of China’s aerospace industry and the technology modernization of national defense, leaving a string of straight and solid footprints in his life path.

The space pillar never stops

Tan Yonghua, who is only 47 years old, has fulfilled the remarkable development and research tasks with opportunities and challenges. He is honored as “The head of China’s space liquid power” in his field. His research results are awarded the titles- National Science and Technology Progress Award, the first prize of National Defense Science and Technology, the first prize of ministerial results, “National Labor Medal”, “National New Long March Pace-setter”, “Space Top Ten Science and Technology Youth”, the Seventh “Chinese Youth for Science and Technology Innovation and Outstanding Award”. What’s more, he has been named the national “Cross-century Academic and Technical Leader”, and has won the honorary titles of “Expert with Outstanding Contribution”, “2008 Top Ten Man of Shaanxi Economy”. In recent years, he led the team to accomplish over ten space mission represented by the Shenzhou VII manned space flight mission. Under his guidance, the flight test with engine still maintains a 100% successful record, and the national key model development and pre-research project has made dramatic breakthroughs, creating a project of independent innovation of scientific and technological achievements.

Over the past two decades, he has participated in and organized a number of developing works of the key models in liquid rocket engine. He has made great contribution to the development of China’s space industry and the modernization of national defense technology. Nevertheless, his space cause does not stop here. He once told the reporters, “Apart from serving for the modernization of national defense, space technology can serve for the national economy and the life of common people as well”. Looking forward to the future of liquid rocket engine in our country, Tan Yonghua has laid a solid foundation for China’s space industry, and is leading the space research team to stride forward and strive for the construction of space power.
