A Joint Statement of the “July 6th” Rescue Team
The “July 6th Rescue” came to a successful conclusion. After more than 72 hours efforts by the government officials and a coalition of animal protection groups, approved by Zhuzhou Animal Health Inspection Bureau, Zhuzhou Small Animal Protection Association (ZSAPA) was entrusted on July 9 with the acceptance of 30 cages of dogs (121 in total) and 14 cages of cats (240). At the present time, all the 121 dogs remain in Hunan to be accommodated by ZSAPA, Changsha Small Animal Protection Association, and Changsha Xing Xing Shelter．They will be ready for adoption later on. 146 of the 240cats have been moved to “July 1” Shelter in Xi’an.
The “July 6th” Rescue was led by ZSAPA, participated by Changsha Small Animal Protection Association, Changsha Xing Xing Shelter, Liuzhou Home of Hope, Xi’an “July 1,” Tianjin Yshine, and Dalian Vshine. It was a heavy blow to the country’s dog meat industry. It was also a success of collaboration with the government. The rescue has far-reaching significance.
This Rescue has attracted intentional misrepresentation and attacks by some people here in China and from foreign countries. One particular foreigner intended to get a foothold in this rescue. His Chinese assistant even offered to buy the dogs and cats. Her proposal was rejected by us. The ensuing attack on us launched in social media in China and overseas was shocking. They claimed that the “July 6th Rescue” was work of their team; that we stole the dogs and cats from their truck; and that we were thugs who used the dogs and cats for money grabbing.
These claims were very unfortunate. Our activists were among the first who reported the truck to the authorities. ZSAPA is a collaborator of the local law enforcement. It is the most qualified organization to lead the rescue. As Chinese groups, we have the best knowledge of China’s dog meat trade. This industry must be confronted without compromise. We can never buy dogs from this industry.Foreign individuals and groups, without Chines government permission, can risk violation of Chinese laws if they involve themselves directly in highway dog rescue, thus giving the dogmeat industry a handle to attack the Chinese groups. Foreign individuals and groups, with donations, can cause damage to the Chinese campaigns against the country’s dog meat trade if they intended to buy dogs from the traders. Buying dogs is an award to the dog meat traders.
We welcome animal lovers around the world to join us. Fighting the dog meat industry calls for cooperation among animal protection groups and the government. It also calls for observing the laws of the land. Rescuing the dogs from the traders is only the first step. Accommodation and post-rescue care is more important. Exaggerating the role of one individual “hero,” conveying incorrect information, and making concessions to the traders are harmful to our cause.
This rescue is result of the efforts of the local groups. Thank you all, friends in China and overseas.
