Are you swamped? Is there a lot going on that you simply can't jam another appointment in your schedule? Well, you're not the only one. And although we simply don't have the time for everything, we certainly don't want to sound curt and offend someone by merely saying, "I'm busy."
Here are some alternative expressions to say that you are busy:
1) “I’ve got a lot to do.” 我有很多事情要做。
You might hear people say they’ve got a lot to do. This is a common way that people use to express that they’re busy. Example: “I’m going to the office early, I’ve got a lot to do today”.
2) “My plate is full” or “I have a lot on my plate.” 我都快忙不过来了。
This doesn’t literally mean that you are eating. If you have a lot on your plate, there is no room for anything else in your life. Example: “I’m starting a new job and I’m moving to a new city, it looks like I’ll have a lot on my plate this year.”
3) “I’m up to my ears.” 我真是忙的不可开交。
Now, this might sound a bit odd, but I promise you it isn’t and it actually makes perfect sense. Think of it like you’re actually up to your ears in something. This expression is used if you’re really busy and you can barely keep up with the work. Example: “This year has been busy at my law firm, we’re up to our ears in cases.”
4) “My agenda is full.” 我的日程已经排满了。
You might use this one if you need to decline an engagement. It means that your daily schedule is all booked up and you don’t have any more free time. Example: “Sorry, my agenda is full this week.”
5) “Buried with work.” 工作上忙的很。
This is another phrase you only use when you are extremely busy. To be buried in work is kind of like being swamped. Imagine you are buried that you can’t even move. Example: “I can’t go out this weekend, I’m buried with work.”
6) “Tied up.” 忙的不可开交。
You will hear native English speakers using this phrasal verb all the time! You can’t take this literally, though; this has nothing to do with actually being tied up! It means that something took longer than you expected or you were doing something and you could not leave. Example: “I was tied up in meetings all day”.
7) “I’ve got a lot on the go.” 我有很多事要处理。
If something is on the go it is not finished. This phrase signifies that there are a lot of things you need to finish. Example: “I’m looking forward to my vacation, I have so much on the go right now.”
8) "I'm so busy (that) I can't even..." 我如此的忙，以至于我无法
We can use this common sentence pattern to show how busy we are. Change the second part to make this your own unique sentence. Example: “Iam so busy that I don't even have time to eat.” “I am so busy that I can’t even go to the bathroom.”
9) "I'm up to my ears in work." 我真是忙的不可开交。
This is a fun idiom that shows that we have so much work. It is like we are drowning in work. This is almost exactly the same as "I'm buried with work."
No matter how busy you are, there are tons of ways to politely express it, so as not to offend or hurt other people's feelings.
